Hypertext fiction is a story built from linked chunks of text rather than a single fixed sequence of pages. Readers have a choice to click, and the path they take shapes what the story actually means. It exists because of computer technology and couldn’t be created in printed books. A reader can choose to click…
Scroll to the bottom of an old website, and you’ll see a small line: “Last updated: September 2001.” This was the last modified website footer. A single date showed whether the page was still active, back when there was no easier way to prove it. Actually, “Last modified” covers three major things: the technical Last-Modified…
A blog carnival is a roundup post where bloggers submit articles from many different participating blogs, usually published on a rotating host schedule with a fresh shared topic each time. Before the tech giants like Facebook groups and X (Twitter), this is how independent bloggers found each other. If you wrote blogs between 2002 and…
A fanlisting is a website dedicated to a single subject, created so fans around the world can easily add their name and country to a public list to show their support. Started in 2000 by Janine through a Fanlisting Network, fanlistings are free to join and typically require only a name, country, and email address,…
Text only websites are pages built with almost no images, styling, or scripts, so they render as plain text, are easy to read, and load instantly. They are not a modern trend. Some of the earliest working sites look like this, and a small but active corner of the internet still uses these traditional sites….
A website shoutbox is a small embedded chat box that lets visitors post short, real-time messages on a website’s home page or inner pages. It became one of the most common ways for visitors to communicate with website owners in the mid 2000s. Services like Cbox and ShoutMix provided millions of boxes, letting visitors and…
An 88×31 web button is a tiny image that is exactly 88 pixels wide and 31 pixels tall, the website owners mainly used them for display and trade to link to each other’s sites. The idea of this came in 1995 from Netscape advertising badges and was adopted by GeoCities homesteaders afterwards, and it didn’t…
Fan shrines are personal websites built by a fan to explore a single character, pairing, or piece of media in as much depth as they want. There is no algorithm deciding what gets published, no committee, and no editor deciding what goes on the page. Only one person decides what their favorite thing deserves. What…
Blinkie websites are places where you can browse, collect, or generate blinkies, they are small animated GIF badges that once decorated personal homepages, MySpace profiles, and even forum signatures. A handful of these websites are still online and actively maintained, preserving collections that date back to the early 2000s. You can also explore massive personal…
A digital garden website is a personal website organised around how ideas connect to one another, not around when they were published. Instead of our traditional blog feed sorted by date, you get a network of linked notes that can grow, update, and branch over time. Visitors follow links instead of scrolling through a timeline….
The indie web revival is happening because people are tired of renting space on someone else’s servers. Platform reach collapsed, the arrival of AI, and the generation that watched GeoCities, Google+, and Vine disappear finally understood the lesson: if you don’t own the domain, you don’t own anything. So they started building again. While running…
If you’ve been falling down the Frutiger Aero rabbit hole, you already know what’s going on next. The specific ache for a version of the future that felt warmer, cleaner, and more hopeful than we got. The important thing I noticed is that you’re not just nostalgic for a design style, you’re nostalgic for what…
If you’ve ever typed “Physics simulation” in Google at night, 10:00 PM, with no goal other than curiosity, you’ve probably landed on pages built for students. You can find a dropdown menu, a textbook diagram, or maybe a “ready” button with no meaningful context. Useful if you already know what you are looking for, but…
